La Jolla’s Famous Sundial House Rises on the Market Once Again

April 5, 2021 by Staff Reporter

The one-of-a-kind modern mansion known as the Sundial has returned to shine on the San Diego-area real estate market, now with an adjusted price of $6.9 million.

Sundial is considered a residential landmark in the tony town of La Jolla. It was designed by and for the world-renowned architect Chong Wan “C.W.” Kim, as his personal residence. Kim’s other noteworthy projects include Loews Coronado Bay Resort and Emerald Plaza in downtown San Diego.

He spared no expense or creativity on his own home, which has been called his “finest and most personal work of art.”

Records show it was completed in the year 2000, on a prime La Jolla lot, with views of sunsets over the Pacific Ocean. The large parcel was purchased for $940,000.

Taking full advantage of those ocean views, Kim built the house with unique, curved, beamed ceilings and voluptuous curves throughout, from the round platform bed in the main bedroom to the circular kitchen with its granite island in the shape of a grand piano.

One of the home’s most interesting features is the entryway. The front yard and backyard feel as though they’ve been flipped.

Once visitors pass through an arched gate, they find a front courtyard with dining areas, a fountain, and a pool. The large pool features an island fire pit, as well as a bridge hovering over it, which leads to the front door.

Luxe materials including Brazilian cherry, granite, marble, and other rich finishes were liberally used in the creation of the six-bedroom, seven-bathroom, 6,700-square-foot dwelling. A wood back deck is an ideal spot for soaking in the Pacific Ocean vistas.
