In Hollywood, movie and television stars are everywhere. But along the coast in Malibu, CA, we’ve found a home known for a different type of stargazing.
“We’re the only home in Malibu that has its own observatory. Everybody knows the house,” explains the listing agent, Timothy White with Douglas Elliman. “The owner used to be an avid stargazer, and loved to stand there all night and just stare at the stars. He had a beautiful telescope up there.”
Prospective sky watchers should know that the telescope is no longer in place, but the empty observatory space remains.
“It’s a dome, and it’s a little room,” White explains, noting that it contains a chair, in case anyone wants to go and stare at the stars.
It has been years since anybody has used it, so it needs some work, he says.
On the few occasions he’s been up there, he says, “It’s pretty phenomenal just to be in that space.”
Whether bidders were enamored with the idea of a private observatory or simply because they loved the location, offers came in quickly for the home, which was listed for $9,999,000.
“We had six offers. I put it on the market on a Thursday and received the first offer Friday morning,” White says. “Point Dume has become one of the hottest neighborhoods in Malibu, and everybody wants to be there.”
The views are the main attraction—and not necessarily the views of the stars.
“The views on this home are like no other,” he says. “Everybody who has come to see this house, the first thing that they saw when they walked through the door was the view. That’s what they fell in love with.”

The 5,000-square-foot home sits on just over a half-acre on a cliff. A nearby path leads down to the sand.
Built in 1978, the home is for sale for the first time since the current owners bought it from the builder.
“In 1988, they did a remodel to the property, where they added the second story and the observatory,” White says. “They really built this house for their liking, and it worked for them for the last 44 years.”

Inside, the layout of the three-bedroom residence is fairly open, with blond wood on the vaulted ceilings. The exposed wood is typically prized by today’s buyers, but there’s still some cosmetic work on the docket for a new owner.
“A lot of people who have come through the property said that the person who did the remodel and design back in 1988 was kind of ahead of their time,” White explains.
“When you walk through the property, you know that it needs to be remodeled, but you don’t feel like it’s a dated property,” he adds. “It needs some beautification, a little face-lift, to just bring it to the next level.”
