On “Fixer to Fabulous,” Dave and Jenny Marrs know that many homeowners crave some color in their home—but picking the right hue can often go horribly wrong.
In the Season 3 episode “Storm Chaser’s Forever Home,” Jenny and Dave meet Trisha and Todd Lemery, newcomers to Bentonville, AR. Todd is a storm chaser who loves the rush of witnessing crazy weather, but it turns out he and his wife want their home to look anything but dark and stormy. Armed with a healthy budget of $200,000, the Lemerys crave a bit more beauty and color in their surroundings, so Dave and Jenny get to work on delivering a palette that will pop without going overboard.
Find out which shades they select and where they’re put for maximum impact—and consider it a crash course on the right way to use color around the house.
Add some color to the front door

When Jenny and Dave first see Trisha and Todd’s house, they’re underwhelmed by the entry.
“It’s just a little boring,” Dave says.
This entry is also rather dark, so Jenny and Dave decide to add a dormer over the front door.
“This dormer is going to literally let the light in,” Dave explains during renovations. “So we are going to open up the porch ceiling below, put the new window above, light comes in.”

To finish this entry, Jenny suggests painting the door a very light pink.
“It’s superlight, just a little blush, just a little touch of color,” she says. Sure enough, the pink isn’t too much and adds a playful look next to the home’s white painted brick.
Wood doesn’t need to be a typical wood tone

Todd and Trisha aren’t wild about wood tones, so when Jenny and Dave install a new built-in bookshelf, they decide to paint it to hide the wood color.
“I wanted to do this paint ’cause I know you guys said you didn’t want too many wood tones,” Jenny says. “So we have this painted, but [it’s] soft and muted and just really pretty.”

Green looks great in a kitchen

In the kitchen, Jenny and Dave find a small, cramped space that would be impossible for entertaining. Right away, Jenny suggests removing one wall.
“The only problem is, now you’re getting rid of some cabinetry,” Jenny concedes.

While Trisha and Todd agree to sacrifice some cabinet space for a more open layout, Jenny manages to squeeze in a sizable island with lots of storage. Then, Jenny adds some big personality to this design with green cabinets on the perimeter and a green island.
“Even though there’s color and it’s a little bit bold, it’s still very classic and timeless and soft,” Jenny says.

While a more neutral color like white or gray might have been safer, the green cabinets make a statement.
