It’s rare for a multipurpose property to come on the market on the quaint island of Nantucket, MA. But for a buyer in search of a historic building with a range of possibilities, the former home of the Nantucket Lightship Basket Museum is up for sale.
Listed for $1,795,000, the property sits on a 7,400-square-foot lot just a few blocks from the town’s marina. It could remain as a commercial site for nonprofit use or be converted back into a single-family home.
Home of the museum for two decades, the building will require renovation work. The museum joined the Nantucket Historical Association in a formal affiliation earlier this year and relocated to a single property.
The sky is the limit when it comes to what you can do with this 1,870-square-foot structure that once displayed hundreds of baskets.
“You could make a two-bedroom on the first floor, and the bathroom is handicap-accessible,” says listing broker Linda Bellevue, of Atlantic East Nantucket Real Estate. “The second floor used to have offices, so you would need a dormer off the back if you wanted to make it residential. There is hot air by gas, and it does have air conditioning. Most of the activity we have seen on this property has been to convert it to residential.”
Built in 1821, the simple shingled building is now listed as a one-bedroom, five-room home. On the first floor there are built-in display cabinets, while the second floor was used as office space.

Nantucket has long been synonymous with lightship baskets, which pay homage to the island’s whaling history. It’s believed the native inhabitants, the Wampanoags, began the tradition of weaving baskets. They were said to be the inspiration for basket weavers who passed the time working on lightships. For non-seafaring folks, a lightship is a vessel on the water anchored in position and acts as a lighthouse.
