Leave it to the “Property Brothers” crew to transform a tired 65-year-old home into a fresh and fabulous domicile. Check out this gorgeous Colonial in Mount Vernon, NY, from the eighth season of their popular HGTV show.
Featured in the season’s sixth episode, the home recently popped onto the market for $995,000.
And what a difference a renovation by Drew and Jonathan Scott makes—especially from a price perspective. The sellers purchased the 2,715-square-foot home for $587,500 in 2015, likely never dreaming it’d be worth close to a million dollars just six years later.
To refresh the memory of Scott brothers fans, the episode was titled “Hoping to Get Lucky With a Fixer Upper” and this was the synopsis:
“Darren and Tory love the city, but with a dog and two kids, they’re tired of squeezing into a tiny urban apartment. The couple is desperate to find a spacious family property in the suburbs. And with their lease quickly coming to an end, they need to find it before they get the boot. Drew and Jonathan step in with a real estate rescue operation and step number one is right-sizing the couple’s expectations. With the renovation-shy couple on board, the search is on for a fixer upper with tons of potential. Though Drew warns against it, a low-ball offer lands the couple in hot water. Later, it’s up to Jonathan to pick up the pace as structural issues, rising costs, and a surprise sprinkler system install leave him scrambling to complete the massive project before their deadline.”
While the description promises drama, there was a happy ending. Of course the Scotts completed the project to perfection, and it’s now likely a bidding war will ensue—which will almost certainly boost the winning offer past the million-dollar mark.
It helps that the sellers have kept the place in immaculate condition over the years. The house looks as delightfully cheery today as the day the paint dried, according to listing agent Andrea Braunstein, of Compass.
The good vibes begin with a canary yellow front door, which offers a perfect contrast to the slate gray exterior and white-framed windows. In fact, the exterior color scheme was so happy, it was replicated on the storage unit in the backyard.

Inside, it’s all about the blues, but there is nothing sad in this four-bedroom, 2.5-bathroom residence.
Blues and bluish grays pop up everywhere, especially in the kitchen, which has a chevron-patterned backsplash. It also features custom cabinetry, a built-in dining island, and stainless-steel appliances.

A built-in dining banquette and lounging area just off the kitchen also has a cheery feel. An adjacent living room is a bit more formal, although still comfy and intimate, with its floor-to-ceiling bookshelves and wood-burning fireplace with a custom surround.
