Las Vegas House of Zappos’ Late CEO Tony Hsieh Hits Market for $2M

by

The estate of the late Tony Hsieh, former CEO of Zappos, has listed one of his prominent personal properties in Las Vegas.

On the market for a cool $2 million, it’s a sprawling 1970s-style estate in the history-soaked neighborhood known as the “Scotch 80s.”

Once the preferred environs of prominent Las Vegas power brokers such as Howard Hughes and Steve Winn, and entertainers including Jerry Lewis and Nicholas Cage, the Scotch 80s was the place to live after the neighborhood was developed in the 1950’s and ’60s.

When first built, the giant luxury homes were known for their ornate flourishes, inside and out.

Common features in the neighborhood include grand circular driveways, elaborate porte cocheres, and elaborately embellished details—all the epitome of luxury at the time.

A drive through the neighborhood today reveals that the area may have seen better days.

A few of the once-grand estates have been renovated and restored to perfection, but there are also numerous vacant lots dotting the Scotch 80s.

Many of the properties not surrounded by security gates now have bars on windows and front entryways—it’s not too far from some of the sketchier parts of old Las Vegas,

The locale may have appealed to Hsieh when he purchased the massive, hacienda-style home for $1.5 million in 2012.

The area was experiencing a sort of retro-chic resurgence, with young millionaires realizing their dreams of life in what was once the city’s most glamorous neighborhood.

Hseih bought the 14,336-square foot-home a few years after selling Zappos to Amazon in a deal valued at approximately $1.2 billion. He embarked on a vintage Las Vegas buying spree, pledging $350 million to the renovation and revitalization of downtown Las Vegas.

Among his other real estate purchases in the area were old apartment complexes and motels, retail and office buildings, parking lots, vacant parcels, and the Las Vegas City Hall—which became the new Zappos headquarters.

The house on the market is within a 5- to 10-minute drive from many of Hsieh’s other properties. Built in 1977, it doesn’t appear to have changed much since then. It’s not the house you might expect of a tech titan, but Hsieh was anything but typical.

MORE FROM REALTOR:

Hsieh was a great believer in bringing people together in unstructured environments and letting creativity flow.

This massive seven-bedroom, 15-bathroom residence could have easily accommodated his famed multiday gatherings for employees, colleagues, and friends.

It features massive living spaces and dormitory-style bedrooms, as well as an apartment above the garage and a carriage house with even more bedrooms.
