“You don’t see a lot of castles in the middle of Denver—and this one is really true to being a castle,” says listing agent Jenny Usaj, with Usaj Realty.

We did the due diligence and confirm this is the only castle in the Mile High City, downtown or otherwise.

Built with local stone in 1886, this fortress is nearly impenetrable.

“The exterior of the home is 22-inch-thick lava stone,” says Usaj.

Local architect William Lang designed the home with a signature three-story turret and beautiful windows.

“It’s just a place to sit and read,” Usaj says of the turret. “It’s incredible that they were able to build [it] with the skillsets and the machines that they had.”

Some of the original details that remain include a huge, colorful window that was a symbol of royalty and prestige in historic homes, Usaj says.

“This peacock window in this home is stunning. It’s at least 6 feet across and has stained glass that was created in Belgium prior to World War I,” she adds. “Part of the way they colored the stained glass was they mixed actual gold into the glass to change the color of it.”

The castle is fresh off a recent face-lift as well. It was listed for $1,575,000 in 2019, Usaj says. The current owners bought it just before the COVID-19 pandemic and updated the kitchens, eight bedrooms, nine bathrooms, and critical infrastructure.

“They did a ton of work,” Usaj says. “It’s all they did during the pandemic.”

carriage house is also available for sale for $1.5 million. It’s built with the same lava stone as the castle and currently serves as a multifamily residence.

Outside, the grounds are lush and welcoming, keeping with the fantastic feeling of the castle.

“It is magical,” says Usaj. “It truly just takes you back in time to a place where people were thoughtful about their craftsmanship, and it’s just one of those houses you walk in and think, ‘Oh, if these walls could talk,’ because they’ve seen so much.”
